When a life was at risk, paralympic athlete Abu Fathiyyaturahma Menk Abdun Mujtahid refused to let his disability stop him from helping. The 30-year-old man from Sabah, Malaysia was out with a friend when he saw a tiny kitten clinging for life in a storm drain. The helpless kitten was trapped down a steep embankment, but Abu knew he had to help. He risked his own life to save the kitten, and the heroic rescue was caught on video.
When the pair of men first saw the kitten, it didn’t look like there was anything they could do. Both men are disabled, and there was no easy way to get down to the kitten’s dangerous position. But despite the risk, Abu was determined to help.

Using all his upper body strength, Abu slowly lifted himself out of his wheelchair. He doesn’t have use of his legs, but he used his arms and body to maneuver himself forward. With careful movements, Abu made his way down the steep hill. He kept his eyes on the kitten and gradually made it to where the scared animal was clinging to a concrete barrier.
Abu could have easily fallen into the water himself, but he reached out a hand anyway. He calmly scooped up the kitten and was relieved to see it wasn’t hurt. It was scared and trembling, but Abu had saved its life. It was a long and tedious climb back up the hill to safety. Abu could only use his arms to lift himself up the steep embankment, but he didn’t give up.
Since this video was taken, thousands of people have praised Abu for his bravery and expressed their gratitude. He saved a life when he decided to get out of his wheelchair. And he also taught society an important lesson–every life matters.
